В одной из сюжетных линий игроку предстоит руководить событиями гражданской войны в Испании и вторжением Японии на территорию Китая. Эта стратегия предлагает реалистичные боевые действия между армиями разных стран.
Игровой интерфейс прекрасно отображает карту мира, состоящую из более чем 11 000 уникальных морских регионов, провинций и крупных городов. В зависимости от времени суток погодные условия в игре анимируются и моделируются для каждой отдельной провинции. Это существенно влияет на передвижение армий и исход сражений.
В игре Hearts Of Iron IV игроку предстоит стать командиром армии. Он будет собирать войска в отдельные отряды, разрабатывать стратегии ведения битвы и планировать наступления. Воздушные боевые силы получили отдельную панель управления, которая позволяет отслеживать расположение самолётов, их действия, потери и количество выполненных убийств.
